Surely that alone doesn't ruin two entire seasons. (major spoilers of course)

They are atrocious, don't get me wrong they have good espisodes, but the whole Buffy-Spike thing was laughable and ridiculous. Oh, we've lost our main dark/troubled vampire love interest to another series, what shall we do? Lets use the other one...wow, took them 5 seconds to think that up.
Especially since there's only a small beginning of it in season five. And while it wasn't the most original plot twist ever, they did make it kind of credible and fitted it nicely into the other drama of season six.
The season 5 Big Bad was mediocre. And whilst Willow at the end of 6 was pretty awesome for a few episodes, they totally stepped back from the edge and ruined what could have been one of the best dark moments in TV history.
Oh come on. She was awesome. I'm not sure about the season five ending, admittedly, but Glory had a ton of great lines and moments, and you've got to admit the Ben is Glory twist was a good one.
I'm not saying they were bad, just that they were not as good as teh 1st 3. They didn't have that perfect mix of comedy/horror/action/light/dark/moody/troubled/fun that the 1st 3 seasons had. Other than a few selected one-off episodes that didn't really follow the overacrhing seasons story.
They were darker, of course, so perhaps less comedy and less fun, which is even more true for season seven. But the overarching story was stronger than in seasons two and three, which still had a few of the "monster of the week" episodes like in the first season, and the extended cast, as well as their older age and hence wider possibilities, made things quite interesting, I thought. It would've been unrealistic to keep going in the same vein as if nothing had happened, as if things were still as they were before, despite everything that happened in seasons two, three and four.
Season 7 meanwhile was just a long turgid boring never ending discussion. It was most definately bad in almost every sense.
It had moments that were awesome, including the entirety of Conversations with Dead People, the Spike-Wood episode and everything involving Nathan Fillion, but yes, probably the weakest season except for one. As I said to Sophy, I thought all the additional characters cut into the screen time of the main cast, which left some of them with very few character development, while honestly the new characters weren't all that interesting except for Kennedy (and the girl in Conversations whose name I forget now). Not a big Faith fan, either, at least not in the way they handled her return. But then, supposedly it wasn't supposed to be the last season, so Whedon kind of had to improvise the series finale and all... perhaps it'd have been better otherwise.
I started watching Buffy.

Some people didn't care for Six's Big Bad, but I thought it was one of the better seasons.

Buffy is GREAT and has a wide range. It's not exactly necessary to watch Angel, though... *NM*
