Mad Men? Mad Cow Bomber Send a noteboard - 05/10/2009 06:46:47 AM
I know it's not SF/F at all, but this seems the right place. I just started watching the first season with my roommate, and I can't figure out why I like it. The characters (to me, at least) aren't particularly appealing - I probably wouldn't want to spend time with them in real life. They all seem either secretly miserable or ignorant. They spend so much time, especially Mrs. Draper, maintaining this particular fiction about their lives that they just become miserable. What's the deal? And most of the stories don't seem particularly great (except for the B-plot about Don's family growing up - that I want to know more about!). But somehow the show remains intensely compelling! What is that?!

On the flipside, I gotta say Vincent Kartheiser is pretty great as Peter Campbell, much better than he was as Angel's son Connor. Maybe because I didn't like him, and now he plays a character (very well, I might add) that we're supposed to hate. At best, I feel sorry for him. Also nice to see another Whedon alum, Christina Richards as Joan Holloway.

Anyone else care to share why they like (or don't like) the show? No spoilers please, obviously.
