Perhaps I missed something when I skimmed the interminably boring A Dance with Dragons, but I don't remember any of that. I also loved Tyrion's interaction with Dany.
Anything to do with dragon fire seems to kill the white walkers. And no, that scene was not in the books. There's a really good summary of how the TV show is better than the books for creating a feeling of menace by showing the White Walkers.
