So timeline wise, let's discuss that since I can't yet on FB. Due to the end of the film, with Jean Gray and Scott Summers alive, how does the new timeline exist?
X-Men First Class
The 1940s section of The Wolverine
The 1970s section of DOFP
And then what? The rest of the films are basically retconned out of existence though we can assume certain events still happen.
Apocalypse
The 2020s section of DOFP
So essentially we have a reboot of the series that allows us to know that Storm, Mystique, Scott, Jean, Beast, etc are all alive in the 2020s and that the events of the next film, Apocalypse, will leave all those mentioned alive.
I'm impressed that they managed to make it sensible so beautifully.
... I think that the Apocalypse story will take place with the 1970s X-Men. I think the older crew is finished. They can still have Wolverine, and they can have Jennifer Lawrence and James McAvoy and all the new stars, plus some new X-Men if they want to add to it as Xavier forms a new team. I think that something about what Logan did in the past awakened Apocalypse, and now the younger team will have to deal with him when they're not ready.
The problem with that, of course, is that we now know that Xavier, Beast, and Wolverine survive into 2014. But I can't think that they'll use Stewart and McKellen again. I think they have to be done now, which means they can't keep going with the future story.
I agree that the movie was quite good. It's probably my favorite of the X-Men movies, and I love that they undid the horrible X3. Completely undid it. That's worth losing the events of the first two movies. Days of Future Past really put a bow on the last 15 years of X-Men movies, and now they can move forward. Almost certainly with the younger version, I have to believe.
