And while it's really not a matter of debate that the French are more relaxed about on-screen sex or nudity (I'm reminded of the TV version of Druon's Rois Maudits back in the sixties, in which at one point a female character walks around topless for an entire scene for no real discernible reason, forty years before HBO would make such random nudity their trademark), the surprisingly vehement French debate about gay marriage and other things have made clear that the gap between the countries in terms of social liberalism isn't as big as the French might like to think.
