BSG had so much promise. Big budget, gritty military sci-fi / character drama. It had amazing effects, action, edge-of-your-seat tension, etc. And then they turned it into a series based on politics and mystical, pseudo-religious crap. A society sufficiently advanced to develop FTL travel and spread throughout the galaxy is, for some reason, perfectly content to follow ancient prophecies, inspirations, hunches and so on. They search for temples and tombs and artifacts and miracles. For a while the whole show is basically Indiana Jones in Space. Ugh.
For what it's worth, season 2 is the worst. After that the nutty mysticism is scaled back to some extent, Roslin's importance is diminished, and they start to intersperse at least a few real accomplishments here and there. So. . .yeah. It definitely gets better, but never back to where it was. Season 1 is some of my favorite sci-fi ever, whereas the best I can say about the rest is that it's worth watching.
