There were too manty changes made to the story that were ABSOLUTELY not needed. I'm not talking about including things that were in the backstory, or detailed in other books, I mean complete total utter (unnecessary) rewriting such as in the troll scene, Rivendale, & the Goblin caves, hell he even rewrote the egle scene for no damn reason. Basically the last 2/3rds of the movie.
It wasn't a case of "we need to shrink the story so it will fit", wot even "we need to add more filler". Jackson completely screws up the personalities, capabilities, and ultimately the growth of the characters must also suffer.
Visually, it was a pretty movie, and had nice effects, but the story is a cheep rip-off of Tolkein's work. I'll probably only watch the last 2 movies on DVD unless my kids demand to go see them in the theater.

except i will say the effects weren't that nice. but then, i hate effects-driven movies and this was just a jarring movie from start to finish in the effects department...

I wouldn't call it a rash - more like chafing.

I think two words have killed this movie for me: "orc nemesis"

To be fair, it's an orc nemesis from the books.

There was not an orc nemesis in the books

There actually was in Tolkein's mind, it is just contained in a different book. *NM*

If you haven't seen it, you really can't judge. It's not a big deal

I think any of those changes need to be viewed with the question, "Did it make a better movie?"

Radagast? Bunny Sledge? Archrival Azog? The whole goblin cavern scene? It's a massacre alright. *NM*
