I'm still not sure why he was in the movies at all, seeing as he is removed from the others (Except II)
What happened to him, I wonder.

Well, his smaller parts in 2 and 3 were definitely due to fan reactions, although with the themes getting more serious and darker he probably would have gotten a lot less screen time either way.
Maybe there is an Extended Universe story telling us what came of him, but I doubt any author wanted to touch that :D
