The rest of the movie is certainly violent enough to make up for it. Weird. And the rest of the scene doesn't make sense if he hasn't been stabbed, so it's not like they can just pretend it didn't happen. And everyone thinks he's dead anyway, so what do they gain in storytelling by making his injury look less severe? It's a bizarre choice no matter what.
I am pretty sure it was the only time we actually saw blood in the film, not counting scratches. Even Loki didn't bleed when The Hulk wiped the floor with him. The aliens always dropped dead without much of a wound either. So I can see the reason they're considering this the most violent scene of the film, psychologically anyway.
But yeah, it feels a tad random anyway. I don't see how it would drop one level of Rating around here just for that, for example.

sometimes they will re-cut a film to get a lower rating in a particular territory
