I actually think that the Elves at Helm's Deep worked a lot better than having some strange new humans (the Rangers were not established in the previous movie) showing up.
I'm pretty sure the Rangers don't show up until after Helm's Deep (The Passing of the Grey Company, in RotK), so that's a useless comparison. But even if this had been the case, removing something confusing does not warrant introducing something worthless in its stead. Replacing Erkenbrand with Éomer, for example, makes sense. Replacing Glorfindel with Arwen fills me with fanboy rage, but it is still understandable. The Elves at Helm's Deep were not. They contribute nothing, and take time away from things that could have been worthwhile.
It also put more emotional weight into the battle, as we saw beings who were essentially immortal being killed.
No, it really doesn't.
It also represented something that wasn't shown "on screen" in the books, the fact that the Elves were actually involving themselves in the war against Sauron. Without showing the Elves at Helm's Deep, non-book reading viewers would have assumed it was basically a human war. It wasn't.
This is the common excuse, and it is complete bullshit. In the books, the Dwarves of Erebor and the Iron Mountains also involve themselves in the war against Sauron, but nobody feels it necessary to include them in the Battle of Helm's Deep.
But more than that, when you choose to include the Last Alliance of Men and Elves you do not go "oh, but that was just a name!" and include another alliance of Men and Elves! And you do not get points because Haldir hangs a lampshade on it.
Daín Ironfoot is not impressed, and neither am I.

It's a fair point, but it was really the wrong battle to put them in.
