It is lovely. And you left out Rhys Ifans, who is absolutely wonderful as Dobbin.

It was a total cop-out - for that matter, it wasn't the only place where they chickened out of representing Becky quite as she was in the novel. I can sort of see why they did it - a movie with the same cynical tone as the novel would never have worked, not even for a niche audience - but still.

I don't really know Rhys Ifans much, so he wasn't a factor in my impulse buy of the DVD based on the joint presence of Garai, Purefoy and Broadbent, but yeah, he did a pretty good job as well. And while I haven't liked Jonathan Rhys-Meyers in anything other than Bend It Like Beckham, because he always has that arrogant sneer, I have to admit he fit George Osborne rather well, that way...

True. I tend to forget its sins. I think I was a little upset the first time, but I haven't read the book since, so I have steadily been forgetting that it is wrong. Probably a sign I should reread.

You left out Byrne. He was my major reason for seeing it.

The first time I saw it, I did not even recognise Ifans until the very end. It was weird. I had only ever seen him in roles where he was a comic sidekick (like Notting Hill), and this film was quite a revelation (I did not recognise Garai, either). I have never seen George Osborne in anything else, and I don't want to. Probably because he did the part very well, yes.
