Interesting. By saying I much prefer a society that allows going up by merit I mean one that allows going from being poor to being rich. This didn't happen much in a feudal society.
Most feudal systems weren't based on wealth, they were based on military accomplishment. Valorous or talented commoners who caught the attention of their lords could be knighted, and exceptional knights could be given land, making them part of the aristocracy.
Which was pretty much the exception. Nobles were practically always born from the aristocracy.
Then again, this is largely true in many free, democratic and capitalistic countries even today. Social mobility in countries like the United Kingdom and the United States of America is nowhere near as great as people would like to think.
But it is MUCH more possible and there than in feudal societies but lets not get into a socialist/capitalist argument here (I would submit though that it is much greater in the US than it is in Britain which is still very much caught up with the idea of the nobility). I mean my parents worked to put themselves through college got good jobs and were able to move me up to the middle class. Now I have to work myself hard to stay there..but that is how it should be.

It's not love for the system - it's an explanation that the system works

Oh, I agree. An aristocratic system mostly precludes equality before the law, a basic requirement
