So, in the final battle, Banner's all "I'm always angry" and BAM turns into Hulk and punches a ship.
Thus, implying that he not only has control over when he turns, but is confident that he can control himself when he Hulks Out.
So... what was up with the original Hulk scene, then?
1- Loki allows himself to be captured, in hopes of (we later learn) making Banner turn into the Hulk while on the ship.
2- The group starts bickering with each other. There's a vague implication that Loki is somehow doing this, or maybe the staff is, or something, but it's never elaborated on and quickly forgotten.
3- Hawkeye attacks the carrier (whatever it was called), crippling it.
4- Explosions make things fall down. Black Widow gets pinned next to Bruce Banner, who is hulking out.
5- Hulk chases BW around. I completely forget if he does any damage to the remaining engines, but he ends up falling off the ship.
6- the attack is eventually repelled and the ship saved.
____
So... what? What was the POINT of all that? Why did Loki come on board- as far as I can tell, he didn't actually do anything. His one move is when he's tricked by Black Widow into revealing that he's targeting Hulk. And while that does add to the stress of the argument, it's played as Loki NOT meaning to do that.
What was Loki's plan?
And secondly, if Bruce Banner has so much control over being and changing into Hulk, what was the whole Black Widow chase about?

I amuse myself.
I'm pleased to report The Avengers offered both entertainment AND justification (spoilers seperated)

The Heli-Carrier is well established in the Marvel Universe as S.H.I.E.L.D.'s base of operations.

Hawkeye does basically state as much to Black Widow. They're made for a spy movie.
