Ah so I see we have a philosophical disagreement. Of course we do not have more good people than Westeros does but a system that "sets ambition against ambition" such as ours is I believe better than a system based on complete and abject rule by one person. Given the greedy self serving nature of mankind putting to much power unchecked in the hands of one person is ALWAYS a mistake. Surly you wouldn't say that the average person is not better off in our system than a medieval one?

As well I have a personal belief that a system that gives more freedom and ability for social advancement based on merit is intrinsically better than one that doesn't.

I certainly agree though that the inclusion of the character here for pc reasons was ridiculous.

Your assessment of how things work in the book is correct but your love for that system is wrong. Of course all of this could be explained to an HBO audience it is the kind of system we dislike yes but um so what? The whole point of this series is that THERE ARE NO GOOD PEOPLE and the system has much to do with that. I do agree though that many of the changes they are making are disturbing.

That's my problem - our system works for us (watch The Wire, which is based on real life events, and tell me that we have any more good people than Westeros does), the SoI&F system works for them. Trying to have the best of both worlds shorts everything out and makes it nonsensical. I do not love the medieval system, and would not want to live in it. On the other hand, I have no prejudices against it, nor do I harbor any illusions of superiority of our system. They were set up by the same flawed species of greedy, self-serving dicks, and whitewashing minor flaws which are more egregious in our time does not change that.
