His death symbolizes the loss of human empathy that the group is slowly going through. A major part of the storyline is that tumultuous interaction between survival-of-the-fittest and modern, "evolved" society. He's a symbol of the latter, and with him gone it will be interesting to see the rest try and fight through the madness without that spark of human love.
