The man wasn't a Mary-Sue, he was just...dull. The female protagonist showed him (and everyone else) up at everything and kicked everybody's ass, took down all the bad guys practically single-handedly and punished everyone who wronged her and was basically just a total unstoppable badass who had it all figured out. Again, not that I minded much in this case, since the rest of the movie (including the other characters) were boring as hell, so she at least livened things up a bit.
Maybe the male protagonist is different in the book, but here he was upstaged by the girl in every single way.
