What I like about anime is that anime (and cartoons in general) is that anime gives you worlds to play in and toys to play with.
Live action movies instead show you hidden worlds, worlds to explore.
Live action vs cartoon stroke different parts of your brains
------------------
This is one reason I think a live action Ghost in the Shell movie would work as a movie (and it kinda has already been made with the first movie as well as the matrix ).
The live action cowboy bebop movie is probably going to suck though for it is hard to channel the joy that is bebop in a 2 hour movie.
Another example is Avatar the Last Airbender is an awesome cartoon (not technically anime), it is a toy to play with. When it was made into a movie it sucked (having a horrible script and director didn't help though). While the Lord of the Rings movies were a world to explore, and it became very successful even with the mainstream audience for while most people don't read, there is a natural instinct to explore and the vistas of New Zealand were so pretty.

There's a lot to love about Anime, but I just can't stand the Japanese cultural elements.

Could not agree more. Though season 3 wasn't bad. Different, but not bad. 4, on the other hand...eh. *NM*
