That's not really a plot hole Cannoli Send a noteboard - 17/01/2012 07:47:34 PM
My wife and I watched the two-hour premier last night. We enjoy the crime drama shows (she's seen every episode of L&O: Criminal Intent), and for the most part we enjoyed Alcatra last night.

I'm bothered, though, by something I consider to be a blindingly obvious plot hole: if you knew they all disappeared in 1963 and have spent the last 50 years sitting around waiting for them to reappear, why the Hell are you giving public tours on the island?

If you've been expecting them all to come back, you could save yourself a great deal of time, effort, money, and blood (the body count has exceeded 10 that we know of, including two police officers) by just leaving everything locked up with motion sensors to alert you to someone moving around that shouldn't be there... like, say, a "returned" convict STILL IN HIS LOCKED CELL!

Gotta say, that kind of ruins it for me.

There is no indication that they are all coming back to Alcatraz. The other two criminals we have seen would not seem to have appeared there (the one Madsen & her partner were chasing in the beginning and the sniper), and the guy who was first seen in Alcatraz woke up with money and stuff in his pocket. The implication is that he was put there by whoever wanted him to kill the guy with the key in the safe. I was also under the impression that he was in a maintenance area or something, not his cell.

That's not to say there are no problems with the show (see my subsequent rant), but with all the heat they deserve, they appear to have this issue covered.
