For some reason I was surprised at first you liked Rome, not really sure why. And then I realized that you must be a Lucius Veranus fan, right? Rome would be higher in my esteem if they hadn't played so fast and loose with the history when they wrote it. I think the real events would have made for as much drama and good storytelling as any of the insane changes they made to the story. Veranus and Pullo to be excepted there of course; yes, they were real individuals (mentioned by name by Caesar his Commentaries on the Gaulic War), both of them centurions. I don't mind the expansion of such characters, nor the addition of fictious figures, but to blatantly alter the events of the Late Republic (which are well documented) is just plain stupid to me. I will say this though, it was a great show (history aside), it had the LOOK of Rome down, and David Bamber was absolutely PERFECT as Cicero! And Perkins simply owned the first season's young Octavius.
Watched a dozen or so episodes of The Shield, and I would say that it was better than a lot of other shows, but I never did get into it. Something I plan to watch at some point.
And I wager that BSG was too candy assed liberal for your tastes.

For shows I watched in their entirety, in no particular order:
The Shield
The Wire
Rome
24
Firefly
Honorable Mention: Sleeper Cell, Deadwood, Angel, Human Target, Lost
For current shows: (due to evolving feelings as the show changes)
1. Sons of Anarchy
2. Justified
3. Walking Dead
4. Breaking Bad
5. Fringe
Honorable Mention: House MD (fading fast), Homeland (rising fast), Dexter, Game of Thrones, Supernatural, Person of Interest
I could not get past the first two episodes of Stargate, or watch more than the miniseries that kicked off the new BSG (is that what you mean by RDM? ). The former was so crappy with it's production values that it was a distraction, while the latter was so pretentious and into itself, particularly in the 9-11 navel-gazing attitude that way too many people had back when that started, that I couldn't be bothered. But the Wire was really good.

For me:
1) The Wire
2) TIE: Battlestar Galactica (RDM) and Babylon 5
3) ------
4) Spooks (aka MI-5)
5) Stargate Universe
Honorable Mentions: The Sopranos, Warehouse 13, Eureka, Game of Thrones, Weeds, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Stargate: SG1, Stargate Atlantis, Misfits. ETA: The West Wing as an honorable mention.
The Wire is simply the best show EVER on television. PERIOD.
