There's a scene in the Stargate TV series in which Samantha Carter mentions an EM field to the SG-1 group and Daniel Jackson expresses confusion as to what EM could mean and she actually has to explain to him that EM stands for electromagnetic. No one with a PhD should have to have EM fields explained to them.
A TV trope that really bugs me: culturally ignorant geniuses.
