I thought the actor did fine, but yeah, I thought the Dad was a bit cliched.

And is it really too much to expect a show with Spielberg and Braga to be a little philosophically hard? These guys have made some ballsy shows in the past.

The brachiosaurs weren't awful, but the carnivores were pretty bad.

On TV I think it is yes...what movies have they done that were philosophical? I mean I wouldn't really think of ET or any of his other movies philosophical. They have to make it so people will watch it (unfortunately). I don't know Braga so I can't comment on him.

I would be interested in a good book on the subject that talked about this stuff sure though. One of the reasons I like Steins Gate (an anime) is that it did deal a bit with the hard science stuff. But then I read about quantum physics for fun...so I don't represent a large proportion of humanity...

By "philosophically hard" I assumed you meant "hard science fiction," and as far as Spielberg goes, I figured Jurassic Park and Minority Report counted, but I suppose reasonable minds might differ on that one.

Brannon Braga has been involved in Hard Sci Fi via being a showrunner on ST: Voyager, writing some of the more technically themed stuff about time travel. But hey, there was so much technobabble on Voyager that it all just kind of washes over you after season 2.

Hmm Minority report was certainly philosophical and interesting not sure if I would call it hard science fiction though...and really it is hard for me to find any star trek show hard science fiction because all the techno babble is just that babble..in Asimov and Clark (my go to for hard science fiction) the science fiction is at least plausible...I mean Fringe is really harder science fiction than voyager as it at least tries to tie things to well known quantum mechanical stuff though I wouldn't call it hard overall as it doesn't spend enough time talking about it and explaining it.

Not sure I've ever seen a TV show I would call hard science fiction actually...hmm
