I really enjoy Dexter, but I wait for it to be on DVD. I rarely buy TV shows, especially if they are an "arc-based" show since the big, surprise ending lessens my desire to rewatch.....i.e., I know what happens. I have the entire TNG series, Firefly, and will be buying GoTs, but that's it. Unless you county last year's Xmas present from my wife, the entire series of Fraggle Rock, which is one of my beloved childhood shows.
Also, I completely argee with you regarding Dexter. The main story arc was great, but the other arcs that essentially lead nowhere (which I think is for filler to get to 12 episodes) is annoying. I normally fast-forward a lot of this fluff.

My point was that those other arcs were annoying in small doses each week, but when you saw the season as a whole, you could more easily they did have a purpose, which was to change Deb so she became amenable to letting Dexter & Lumen go when she caught them, and to possibly move her character in a direction where she can accept the truth about her brother some day or at least make the same choice she did for the vigilante killers she did not know included her brother. My point was that seeing it all together like that made the annoying aspects less so, because when seen as a whole, the point of the supposed digressions is more readily understood.

Even if you're only going to watch a show once, it's rather easier that way.

I think there's precedent in the shift of filmed drama to an episodic format.
