I did not think there was a Soviet spy at all, so I had no theories on who it might be. But it does fit.

Ah, I probably had the advantage of knowing it was in the era when a Soviet spy ring was operating in the UK - the Cambridge 5. It made it seem very likely there would be one.

Yes, the BBC is very good at ending series at the right time and leaving people wanting more... but, you know, to go with your description, it would be doable to go and cut in and out on a different passage of time in the future.

Fair point in terms of cutting in and out but the main story lines are wrapped up now so it would feel, to me at least, like it is forced while this series felt more natural. Tacking another series risks cheapening it too much - to do another season they'd have to replace the spy mystery story line, come up with a replacement for Soviet-Hungry and the Suez Crisis and really the main characters are mostly well set up to go their own ways so they'd have to be brought back together.

I guess they could just make a different show next time, though. The characters are good, but not that iconic that they can't be replaced.

I think it works better like that - if the writer is good enough they should, hopefully, be able to come up with something new.
