The book Rob, to me, was much more controlled by his mother than TV Rob who seems to have a mind of his own.
Almost every scene throughout the series that involves Robb is from Catelyn's POV. So, a lot our information comes filtered via the various bias of the POV. And since Robb never has his own POV there's nothing to balance it.
Whereas in the show the only filter is the viewer.

In the book when he takes whats-her-name for a wife even though he knew he was betrothed to Lord Walder's daughter, well we both know what a stupid mistake that was. He absolutely should have known better.
Stupid, yes, but perfectly understandable given the circumstances.
And the result- there's no way anyone saw that coming. I've always thought it extraordinarily unfair to hold against him an event that defied every convention of Westeroi culture.
