ALl of those little vignettes, that little northern town where Shadow stays for a while, they all help to set the mood of the book.
And I'd have to say I preferred the original, leaner version. Which isn't to say don't like the little details, i do, its just i see that the mood would be conserved without every single one.
I like the original, but I will admit that the addition of more vignettes does seem unnecessary.
Mine's the version with Jesus in it in one scene. Which is apparently the extended author's cut. Which I didn't think was overly long at all, but then I enjoy Stephenson and his detours make Gaiman's seem non-existent. And then there's the likes of some classic authors who trump that. It's a stylistic form, some like it, some don't.
And the answer came to her instantly: pride. Oh, you hear them say it's a sin; you hear them say it goes before a fall. the shepherd prides himself on keeping the wolf out from the flock. We pride ourselves on making a good history of our lives, a good story to be told.
