I loathe the BBT jokes like that- nerds do not work like that!
Yes, sometimes the nerds have their own version of things, and that can be funny. But it's not because they're idiots.
At one point, they play a game called "Rock Paper Scissor Lizard Spock" because har-har they love Star Trek. But it's not because they're so deranged that they think this is the normal version, it's because they got bored with the original version and made their own. It wasn't a hilarious joke, but it was much better than the ones where we just point at the nerds and go "Har har, stupid nerds don't even know about bubblegum and glue!"
I do not see that as a commentary on nerds in general. Sheldon is rather a special case. You would not see any of the other characters doing the same.
Now do not misunderstand. I am not claiming BBT as some form of high art. But I rather enjoy the tweaks and kicks they make. Or, rather, made before they realised the average viewer were more interested in who slept with whom.

Seeing quotes like that (and the World of Warcraft episode) is what keeps me from watching.

It's an attempt to sound smart while saying something incredibly childish and simple

Which is why I don't want to watch BBT. The character is wholly unappealing. *NM*

Eh. I think if they re-did the joke today they'd make Sheldon use the original, but force/explain it
