I found Bran's wolf attacking the assassin was ferocious enough and I don't even remember them looking or feeling very threatening from the books, but that may just be my memory because the kids control them.
Direwolves are still just large, scary dogs, in that they will act like dog-ish animals. How much scarier can that type of animal be as a puppy/teen? If you think about things like pitbulls and the like, they are scary when they are older because of the public beliefs about them, not because they are exuding fear bolts.
Point is that as young doggish creatures, they wouldn't be all that scary anyway - unless they, you know, rip someone's throat out, for instance. The reality of the killer nature of that animal did it for me. I don't think I'd be happy with a fake wolf just to make it artificially scary.
