As I said, you sound like you know what you're talking about.
Aemon Send a noteboard - 19/04/2011 03:53:34 PM
I'm a motion designer/VFX artist for 25 years and I've worked with HD signal and monitors for almost half a decade before they began to be used for broadcast, so I'm well aware of all these issues - perception at the home end is stuff we have to deal with on a daily basis - and the near urban myths surrounding consumer grade TVs.
You don't need to flash your credentials, I'm sure you have lots of knowledge. Nonetheless, what you said was, as far as I could tell, wrong. Perhaps it was me not understanding you correctly (definitely possible), or maybe you just misspoke. I'm happy to have the matter further explained to me if you'd like to take the time, but I don't think I was out of line in my attempt to correct you. For example, you made the following statement:
The TV never extrapolates anything - any image interpolation is done in postproduction
...which, based on everything I've read, is just blatantly wrong. You can find descriptions of the interpolation that occurs in TV motion smoothing circuitry everywhere from AVSforum to manufacturers' websites. It's true that interpolation occurs in postproduction to format a program for tv display (something I'm sure you know far more about than I do) but that is NOT the only place that it occurs, and NOT the cause of the hyper smooth, fake looking soap opera effect.
I don't want to go into a technical debate over this, it's just a lot of "techno maniacs" issues are pretty much imaginary.
I'm not sure what you mean about not wanting to have a technical debate (didn't you post a reply chock full of technical stuff?). Nonetheless, I fully agree with you regarding the imaginary thing. Many of the "issues" that people loudly complain about on various forums are so difficult to notice that they might as well not exist. I don't feel that the soap opera effect is one of these, however; it's very noticeable to the average person.

Poopy was kinda strong language. It is a matter of taste and Aemon is my new favorite.
