I've watched most of the episodes through all 10 seasons

I've enjoyed watching the progression from boy-ish Clark Kent into 'man of steel' Superman, though it has been a LONG process.
The best seasons were the early ones (1-5) when Clark was discovering his powers, there was still hope for some of the early romances in the show, and they were still in high school.
I actually bought season 5 because I enjoyed it so much. I still don't own any of the other seasons, but have considered purchasing them all some day. The fifth season really had some great moments in it.
As major actors/characters have left the show over the years, gaping holes were left in the focus of the show. Two characters in particular who had been the entire focus for years left the show and the big question, "Where do we go now?" wasn't answered for about a season and a half.
I felt like season 9 really picked up the pieces of a dying show (I don't know if they got new writers or switched producers or what) and turned it into a watchable experience again. There was a definite shift in story-telling and in the visuals. They began using snap-shots to display the action instead of constantly showing Clark in slow-motion, and the colors have gotten darker in general since around season 8 or 9. While the changes aren't necessarily better or worse, it's obvious somebody new has taken the reins and is driving Smallville in a new, refreshing direction. There's actually a cohesive progression to the story again and it looks like Smallville will wrap up well here in season 10.
All in all, I think it's worth a shot! There's not the depth of Battlestar Galactica or even the immense enjoyability of Buffy, but Smallville has its own charm. Don't be afraid to fast forward through some of the drawn-out, teeny-bopper romance scenes or even episodes.
P.S. I was deliberately vague on details regarding the plot, in case you decide to spend some time in Smallville and Metropolis.
Enjoy!!!
