How about:
Farscape - great show, probably one of my favorite Sci Fi shows ever. Has humor, action, drama, and... puppets (but don't let the last one keep you from seeing it). There are 4 seasons and a movie, Peacekeeper Wars that wraps it up.
I have all of it downloaded, but when I tried watching it I got bored after a few episodes. I understand I gets better, but I've started it two or three times and can't get through half a season.
It does get better, but it has it's off moments. Too silly (like you said below) comes to mind here, but those come later after you're already attached to it.
Doctor Who - just watched this this year and I love this show. I'm finally caught up through season 5 (of the new series anyway). Tends to be on the silly / sarcastic side of things as well. Seems I enjoy that with my sci-fi.
I watched a couple episodes, and found it TOO silly and sarcastic. Plus hasn't the show been going off and on for like twenty years or something?
Yes, the originals were back in the 60's I think. I've just watched the 5 new seasons. I love the humor, so if you're not into that I can see why this wouldn't work. Same for Farscape, really.
Torchwood - spinoff of Dr. Who. This one is good, but I'm not all the way through the first season yet. More serious in tone, but still good. Heard that the first season is slow, but that the second and movie are much much better.
I might have to look into that one. Still the time travel sort of thing that Dr. Who has?
Torchwood is the earthbound team that deals with alien tech/invasion on earth. Won't have the time travel emphasis and hasn't that I've seen yet. They're kind of investigators to a degree as well.
Dresden Files - canceled after one season and adapted from the book series. It was a fun show while it lasted. You can watch them online at this point, or DVD. Modern day paranormal investigation. Good stuff.
Like The X-Files or Fringe?
Not as based in realism as either of those. Dresden is a wizard investigating paranormal stuff, using magic.
I'm looking into Warehouse 13 and Sanctuary now myself, but haven't seen enough to form much of an opinion. I dropped the Event, Fringe and Lost, because I got frustrated with them (if that colors my opinion in anyway). The new BSG was good, but I haven't made it all the way through all of those episodes yet either. Needed a break from it.
I tried Warehouse 13 when it first aired and didn't think it was worth much time.
I think I may pick Fringe up and try it again. It didn't pull me in fast enough when it premiered.
Lost frustrated me too, but in a "What the hell happens next?! Hit play already!" sort of way. I'm sure that it helped that I started watching it all the way through just a couple of weeks before the finale, and I didn't have to wait between seasons.
I started at the beginning and got through part of season 2. Might watch it again, but knowing what happened in the end kind of keeps me from trying. I have a low tolerance for this kind of show it seems.
I'll try to think of some more. Those were my favorites right now, so came to mind easily.
Is there a website where...?

Fringe. Farscape. Maybe Buffy the Vampire Slayer?

FWIW, Angel is a much better character on his own show than he was on Buffy. *NM*

I never liked him because he was a vampire sleeping with the Slayer.
