To celebrate all that Labor has done for me, I spent the day sleeping and watching Star Trek the Next Generation on BBC America. T'was good fun.

But a thought occurred to me: is it normal for a ship to have that many Officers of Command rank on a single ship?

I wikipedia'd it, and any Star Fleet officer who holds the rank "Commander" is able to command a ship of the fleet, and the only ship-board rank higher is Captain.

By the end of the series and the associated movies, the list of Commanders was quite long. Riker (became a Captain), Troi, Crusher, Data, LaForge, and Worf were all Commanders by the end. When we look at other ships, there are significantly fewer Commanders around. When the series started, Troi, Data, LaForge, and Worf were all Lieutenant Commanders.

Meh. It just struck me as odd.
