Haven't seen Night Watch...
I wouldn't bother, the book is much better and the book is just good for a book of the type it is, if you see what I mean?
... so yes, that is pretty much the problem. I don't imagine I've seen enough non-English-language movies to not put Zatoichi in my personal top 100. I don't even know if I'd *get* to a top 100, i.e. whether I've actually seen as many as 100. So yes, I don't actually know if all those other movies are as good as I assume they are. Perhaps a lot of them are crap and far worse than Zatoichi, which as I said was decent enough. All I can say is, I saw it in the cinema (in Canada, ironically), and I wasn't really wowed.
so it just goes back to my original point - you have no taste
I do really like it though.
I at least don't exactly have much of a head start, seeing how there are no Belgian movies on the list any more than British ones. But of course, yeah, non-English-language movies are more likely to be shown or known in Belgium than in the UK - not Belgian ones, which are fairly limited even if there's a revival in Flemish movies lately, but foreign language movies in general. No doubt a movie like Goodbye Lenin, for instance, is easier to have seen here than in the UK. Still, the large majority of the movies we get are American or less often other English-language ones, so the difference is not as big as you might think. No doubt it's different in France, and to a lesser extent in Germany.
Well yes but any Belgian films that are made would qualify. I'd imagine though that for a lot of people either French or Dutch films are understandable with out subtitles, if not perfectly understood?
Plus the british, as an average, aren't the world's biggest fans of other languages

Since it's "World Cinema," does that automatically exclude U.S. films? *NM*

Not only that, it also seems to exclude British, Australian and other English-language ones.

No one minds Australia's exclusion. All they make is bad Jackie Chan films. *NM*

In fairness, Roberto Benigni being an overrated ass doesn't mean his only good film isn't good.
