As for my quibbles with the list... Legolas Send a noteboard - 31/08/2010 03:01:43 PM
I've seen too few to do much of a critique, but really now, Amelie wasn't THAT earth-shattering. It's a charming movie and deserves a spot on this list, but not the second spot, nor one in the top ten, or twenty. You can't seriously put it higher than City of God or The Seventh Seal (to limit myself to movies I've actually seen). The same goes to a lesser extent to Pan's Labyrinth - that one perhaps does deserve a spot in the top twenty, but better than City of God? I don't think so. Y Tu Mamá También was a decent movie, but also seems surprisingly high-ranked - higher than Das Boot or Jean Cocteau's amazing La Belle et la Bête?

As for notable snubs, I'm a bit surprised to not see Mononoke Hime in there, but I guess Miyazaki is already well-represented with two other movies. I'd also have expected La Grande Bouffe (that one I haven't actually seen) and perhaps a few other French movies, French cinema was already quite well-represented as well. On the whole I think there weren't too many big omissions. Some may feel that Korean cinema got a bit short-shrifted, but as I never got what anyone saw in Kim Ki-Duk, I for one am happy about that. In geographical terms, the Middle East is entirely ignored other than a few Iranian movies if you can call that Middle East, and I think at least the excellent Egyptian Imarat Yacoubian (Yacoubian Building) deserved a spot on the list, but no really unforgivable oversights that I can see.
