I definitely don't agree with 'at the time' comment, I think that we've gotten less feminist in recent years. There's been a backlash against feminism.
There's a ton of academic papers/essays/even books about Buffy and feminism. A lot of it is on the internet.

The Vampire Diaries is the successor to Buffy. It's awesome like Firefly was awesome.
