I liked the episode as a whole. I found that the way of combining a series of smaller mysteries worked (although I am going to keep myself awake trying to figure out which corresponds to what story -- appart from the Bruce-Partington Plans, obviously).

I was not a great fan of Moriarty. He was not at all like the character of Moriarty -- it seemed more like a Joker type villain. Very odd. VERY odd. But I did like the mutual sacrifices of Holmes and Watson. I love that sort of stuff in the books, and it works very well in moving pictures, too.

Thoughts?

I think he was a character which needed to be changed from the books. I think the concept of one person being in charge of all the criminals in England is just too unrealistic. Having him be almost a mirror image of Sherlock also makes sense and I thought was a nice nod to the sergeant's warning to Watson in the first episode. I do feel the his very last action was odd and more done to force a cliffhanger rather than because it made sense for the character.

Yes. I didn't mind the change in him from a professor to a consulting detective. What bothered me was his "look at me, look at me, I'm CRAAAAAAAZY" way of talking. It didn't fit.

Overall I enjoyed the series and it seems very likely that the BBC is going to order more episodes.

That is good. I didn't expect to like these, but I really do.
