So, Castle is a semi-new (as in, there are two seasons so far) tv series starring Nathan Fillion and Stana Katic as the mystery writer Richard Castle and police detective Kate Beckett, respectively. Castle begins helping out with Beckett's cases because he needs inspiration for his new book. Now, eventually, he gets the idea for Nicki Heat, and so really has no reason to stay around helping Beckett. But, inevitably, he develops a crush on Beckett, which just as obviously, she does not return. So, of course, Castle sticks around, and flirts with Beckett, and tries to get her attention. Beckett, of course, begins dating another detective in the second season, which frustrates Castle to no end. Half the drama in the series comes from the sexual tension between the two characters, as as season two progresses, we begin to see Beckett developing feelings for Castle. Then in a completely shocking and in no way expected season finale, Beckett gets ready to admit her feelings on to discover that oh noes! Castle has moved on and is probably hooking up with his publisher/editor person! Cue crushing despair and sadness as the season closes, leaving everyone with bated breath, wondering “Is this a misunderstanding? Will they work out their differences?”
Now, I saw this coming all the way from season one, but I was crossing my fingers, praying that this show doesn't turn into a copy of Bones. Five seasons now of sexual tension between the two main characters, who are very obviously attracted to each other, but NOTHING EVER HAPPENS! Sure, there's an episode or two where Bones might get pregnant by Booth, but without them ever having sex, but still! Five bloody seasons of sexual tension. I personally find that it detracts from the entire series for me; the episodes are all well and good, but at the end I'm still left thinking “Just hook up already, would you?” Everyone says to me that having Booth and Bones become a couple would ruin the series, but I just can't believe that to be true. A show doesn't become great due to just one element; it takes multiple things coming together for a show to be properly good.
Castle is a great show so far. I honestly quite like it. I mean, for one, it's got Nathan Fillion in. How could you possibly not like it? However, I really want to see the producers and writers take the show in a direction in which Castle and Beckett could become a couple without the show losing what makes it so brilliant. I don't believe this is an impossible task; a couple can still have the same bickering and snarky comments that are traded between Castle and Beckett. The two sidekick detective dudes will still be funny, and can still make embarrassing comments, and there will still be crazy cool murder cases to solve. Sure, there won't be drama coming from Castle being jealous over Beckett's relationship, or Beckett slowly realising she finds Castle to be attract, and none just an annoying author. However, there will be new relationship drama! Surely that must be enough to make up for the lack of sexual tension.
And that is how I feel about Castle.
