The plotline wasn't in the books, but it was entirely consistent with the established mythology.


The fact that the male confessor child was allowed to live. That was never done in the books. The risk was considered too great to allow the child to live.


The way the TV show did it was actually quite faithful to Richard's character as they'd established it thus far. Those were two of the more interesting episodes - especially the 1st season finale.


Yeah, it was truer to his character. Too bad that situation never really came up in the SoT series.
