The 3D movie craze is irritating as hell, especially when most movies aren't better served by it at all. And the 3D Television thing is stupid as hell- I'm betting it won't take off until they figure out a way to do it without wearing glasses.
But yeah, Avatar's 3D effects were just plain different. It's too early to see if other directors will pick up on it, but it could easily be 3D's Citizen Kane, in terms of pioneering new 3D techniques (sigh... wish it was a better story, but whatever).
Basically, with other 3D movies, it's like you're watching a screen, and things keep jumping out at you. With Avatar, it's like you're looking at a window, and everything is beyond the screen. And since you say that you want immersion, that's really the way to do it (after all... in real life, how often do things come flying at your face?)

I amuse myself.

I haven't seen anything in 3D since 3rd Rock From the Sun had an episode.

Interesting. I thought I was the only one who didn't care about 3-D.

You make it sound like the studios aren't ramming it down our throats at every possible turn.

Luckily if you have a movie theater with many screens you can get it 2D.
