But Locke made no deal with Smokey, he was knocked out in the crash and found himself not paralyzed anymore. He thought that a miracle and went spiritual, opening himself to "listen to the island". This sounds more like something Jacob might have pulled off (same for Rose?), or the else it's just the unplanned consequence of the special energy/power radiating from the island (which indeed may derive from the power "Smokey" being held there, but that's beside the point).
