No, you're absolutely right. I was just annoyed when I saw the results. We were hoping (read: I was) to get some info from the night (without me getting killed, obviously), and seeing we came out empty handed (basically Day 1 all over again, but now at an extra disadvantage) made me post this message.
In response to FT's comment on RPS below: you know this didn't even cross my mind? Still struggling with the RPS thing. Although I do understand how it works, I keep on forgetting about it and the consequences.
On the other hand, if it was a "battle of skills" (wit, combat, etc) any failure should at least be noticeable to the targeted person. I imagine an NK on wit to go like "You want to go in here?" "What? In here?" and if it's successful the target will step in the cage, if unsuccessful the target will notice there's a cage and run away. Same with combat, albeit a little more noticeable (as in: blade versus blade) and I can think of similar situations for the other two skills.
Basically: a failure should be noticed I think. So, either
1) beet's theft is the scum move (but that would seem... weak to say the least),
2) the attack was unsuccessful (which means that one of us needs to tell us right now what they've seen), or
3) the attack WAS successful, but we just haven't seen the effects.
In the latter case, a Cult is the most likely answer, which could be the Undead (granted, Yuna's claim makes this rather unlikely) or the Omnians (eager to convert others).
Come to think of it: they are actually even more likely to be an in-game Cult than the "inverted tropes" Undead from Discworld, aren't they? If my memory is correct, in the books, the once powerful religion of Om was reduced to only one priest, and is now trying to convert people again. Or did I misremember?
