Survey

1. Do you favor rigid deadlines, semi-flexible but announced deadlines, post-slump activated deadlines, no deadlines, or something else?

Either rigid or semi-flexible or announced. Deadlines are good, they spur people into action.

2. Do you want to see clues play a bigger or smaller role in games?

I definitely like the clues. I think it's best done in a "Mad Maud" style of game though (that is, where you can't tell if someone is scum just because you know their name/appearance).

3. How about roles? Have we had too many, too few, just right? Do you like to see role variants in play or would you like to see a bit less experimentation with that?

I love roles. Experimentation and subverting expectations is cool.

4. Any roles you feel we see too much of, or not enough of, or that you absolutely despise?

I feel like every game has a doctor. Protection is good, but it might be interesting to switch it up. Maybe no doctors, but the scum have to choose whether to shoot someone or inject them with garlic (for a vampire game). Of course, I imagine injecting a human with garlic wouldn't go over too well either... hm...

5. How about sub-plots, midgame ‘Events’ or micro-games, do they interfere with or enhance the game?

Events are good, but I think they're best when they don't require much player input, and they're irregular. Mad Maud had the quirk that no one would get down to rooting out scum until that Day's Lunch had played out. Then there was that other game where we had to vote for people to go look for treasure, and then they became Masons.

6. How about inactivity? Of the various options, from modkill to substitution, which do you prefer, and should we be ramping up enforcement or dialing it down? How many days is too many or too few, and should prior activity factor into it?

I think substitution is best, but more to the point, I think people shouldn't join if they don't think they'll be able to meaningfully contribute. I totally get that some people have jobs that don't allow time for message board games, and then they're too tired to check in when they get home.

Keep in mind none of this is binding on any other mod, or me for that matter, I’m just trying to check which way the winds blowing while my setup has some flexibility, you can comment generally or specifically. Incidentally I’m currently favoring two deadline methods, the ‘Countdown’ and “Bodycount” methods. The former just starts with say 14 days for a day and drops 1 day for each subsequent game Day, so day 2 would be 13 days long, 3 12 days, etc, as maximums only of course. Bodycount Method just makes days max out in duration equal to the current number of surviving players, so come day 6 with 5 players left there’s only 5 days to lynch someone.

Both of these sound very interesting.
I amuse myself.
