Cool, sounds good. beetnemesis Send a noteboard - 16/12/2010 08:31:21 PM
I read all the Dune books, but it was a WHILE ago... and I haven't read any of the new stuff with the author's son. I can remember the general plot, and some of the worldbuilding details, but I don't think I can remember a single character's name other than Muad'dib.

Eesh, this sounds complicated. I'm sure it'll be awesome, though. Minor clarification- are we all going to have different Victory Conditions? Or is it going to be like Mafia, where most people have "kill all the mafia" as a VC, and only a few people will have something special.

I couldn't include an exact example so I left it vague, everyone has a Score, and basically is trying to meet VC's - goals - that give them points to their Final Score, I'm still flushing out a scale for that, but the majority vote case is an automatic end game and that person receives a lot of points, but would not necessarily 'win' and come in second or third place. As an example, let's say a majority was worth 50 points in of itself, and there were generic VP's calculated at End Game - 1) 1 VP for every ten stocks of CHOAM (round down), 1 VP for every 500 MS of income (round down), 1 VP for every 3 Billion Solaris of Wealth (round down) and 1 VP for every vote held, but players have their own goals, example:

Ix -
Goal: Own 5 Assets not including CHOAM stock - 15 points
Goal: Own 10 Assets not including CHOAM stock - 25 points
Goal: Industrial Giant - control more non-stock assets than anyone else - 10 points
Goal: Have more Wealth than House Richese at the end of play - 15 points

So while in general players would be aiming to own a lot of CHOAM Stock, Ix won't be, and if Atreides pulls a majority victory and gets 75 points, and Ix has met all its own goals and has 65, but Atreides hasn't met many of its own goals trying for that majority, Ix might outscore him.

But the 'majority victory' is just one of the endgame options, it can happen whenever, the game can end of the Severe Crisis events. One might be "Civil War: Vote to Dissolve the Landsdraad Council?" and have attached - A vote of yes will end the game, due to the civil turmoil as new kingdoms form each 5 votes a player controls will be worth an additional 2 VP, CHOAM Stock will be worth half it's normal VP, each Asset: Weapons Factory will be worth 5 VP... so players with a lot of CHOAM Stock won't want the game to end and vote no and players with lots of votes will cheerfully dissolve the council to become their own small kingdom and guy who own weapons factories will be happy to supply weapons to everyone, using the Ix example above, this would be a good one for them to vote for since their goals don't emphasize stock and they probably own weapons factories at that point. Along the way, Auctions might include things like "Honorary title: The Duchy of Ecaz needs to appoint a new Captain of Parades, this esteemed position grants its bearer 2 Victory Points" or other possible game enders like "CHOAM power lay: CHOAM seeks new regulatory power over Trade, will the Landsdraad give this power and essentially shift the balance of power to CHOAM?" and the game ends with CHOAM stock counting for Double if it's approved. This would be one Ix probably wouldn't want to vote for.

I've not rigorously worked out VP and Crisis cards yet, but in theory the game will probably have a Crisis Rating (Current Round # plus 1d6) and Crisis will be Lesser (1-5 points), Moderate (6-8 ), Heavy (9-11) or severe (12+) and most severe Crisis will have an option to end the game, so come round 6 there will be a good chance an option to end the game will come up, and each round grows increasingly likely to have that option, but on seeing a Crisis that will really screw with them if passed and hearing a lot for favor for it, a player with a lot of votes might decide to strike a deal with a player who has a lot of votes "All your CHOAM Stock for All my Votes" and end the game before the Crisis Vote happens.
I amuse myself.
