Presumably you don't keep wild animals as pets, so I don't think you'd have to worry about that. It's sad, and I do think that it would have been better if they had tested the raccoon and quarantined the squirrel, but it's a good thing that public health officials don't mess around when it comes to rabies. And I don't know what the feasibility of quarantining a squirrel is, or if there are good reasons to test it instead of quarantining it.
Bringing a wild raccoon in the east coast into your house is the height of irresponsibility as a pet owner. A scientific article I just glanced at says that "more than 85% of the rabies cases currently recorded in the United States are reported from raccoons."
