It was clearly a labor of love, and the behind the scenes stuff shows that the cast and crew also thought highly of it. They made three extremely long movies that would have had to be MUCH longer if they cut nothing.
Stuff like the removal of Tom Bombadil and the Scouring of the Shire made sense to me - narratively, some things have to be cut. I didn't particularly care for giving Glorfindel's heroism to Arwen, which saved no significant time and was essentially a tiny preview of Current Day nonsense. The dwarf-tossing jokes were dumb at the time and NOW are both dumb and extremely dated.

Mistakes were made but there is enough evidence of respect and effort that they can be forgiven. Repurposing story elements or dialogue elsewhere seems to have been done out of an effort to use as much Tolkien stuff as possible. On this show, it appears to be an effort to draft off the movie trilogy.
Based on what I've read, I don't think this crowd gives a damn about Tolkien or his work. This show seems to be at best mercenary (Bezos wanted his own Game of Thrones) and more reasonably described as an insult to Tolkien's work. But hey - I haven't watched it (or even read The Silmarillion) so maybe I'm wrong.
You're not.

...what do you think of Jackson's LotR trilogy? There's a whole lot of change going on there. *NM*

I don't know. I remember seeing message boards when the films came out.

It is possible for a person to dislike this show and not care about sex or race of the characters.

Yes, and not everyone who dislikes the show dislikes it for those reasons.

I think Peter Jackson & co. actually liked LotR

I agree, mostly. But the complaint here was that it is foolish to change any of the writing.

I just rewatched the last two Hobbit movies - those are sort of inbetween I guess.

Exactly my point. It's not about the canon. The films get the canon wrong left and right, too.

That's not what I meant precisely - for me the canon is still important.
