maybe the Biden campaign shouldn't throw this particular stone at their detractors in the Democratic camp.
But certainly the 'bedwetters'' position has become a lot stronger after the debate.
This may come as a shock to Americans, but in just about any other democracy in the world, an election campaign takes only 1-2 months from start to finish.
Actually I rather think a significant part of America's political problems are due to its absurd election calendar - between the bi-annual Congressional elections and the absurdly long duration of the presidential election process, some sort of election campaign is ongoing for about 30 to 50 percent of each four year cycle depending how you count, which is utterly nuts. Is it any wonder then that politicians are too busy fundraising and campaigning to bother actually governing?
But as for your point about how it wouldn't help - certainly it wouldn't work to force him out if he doesn't want to. The suggestion is for him to voluntarily decline to run - in which case, yes, of course the Biden campaign would get as many resources to the other candidate as they could, or use their own resources in the other candidate's favour. And given the extremely high numbers of Americans, even on the Democratic side, who think Biden is too old / too much mentally weakened to run again, why wouldn't they prefer another candidate? Though not, of course, any other candidate, some would be more viable than others.
From a foreigner's perspective, one is tempted to say Americans would get what they deserve, except it's not only the US he'd be fucking up for four years, but also the rest of the world.
I think you have a rosy view regarding Biden stepping down (His people were not SURPRISED last week. They knew.) They've been hiding his decline for a long time. They argued it was irresponsible for Robert Hur to expose Biden as guilty, but incompetent to stand trial when he recommended no prosecution in his investigation into Biden's possession of classified documents. When the WSJ wrote one month ago about THIS VERY PROBLEM, the Biden Camp just denied.

When we got glimpses of him going off the rails in previous appearances, they continue to deny. They even falsely claim editing of video and named the supposed efforts of the editors 'cheapfakes'. It's ridiculous. His handlers thought they could continue getting away with this for another campaign.
Now you think he's going to agree to step down and give the warchest to ANYBODY that's not hand-selected by Joe's faction? Seems unlikely. They'll all lose their phoney-baloney jobs.
As for Trump, I still point to the Hillary Campaign's very successful efforts to boost Trump in the 2016 primaries to make sure they didn't have to face an actual challenger. They were so sure they would wipe the floor with him that they manipulated the press into helping Trump become the Republican nominee. And then he beat her.
And then we got what they deserved.
