For all of its flaws, it's a wonderful world filled with interesting characters and events.
I am glad we share several of the same books, though.
I have Massie's Nicholas and Alexandra but can't bring myself to read it because I've read so much already about them and I suspect even with Massie's brilliance it would just be needlessly repetitive. I also have Norwich's The Middle Sea but haven't read it. His Byzantium trilogy was great but his history of the popes was substandard to Eamon Duffy's.
Yeah, if you've read a lot about one subject, it can get to a point where there's is nothing new to learn and no new perspective, no matter how wonderful a new book about it might be. Still, it's an excellent book if you ever do decide to read it. I've never been disappointed in a Massie book, even if I like some much more than others.
