Most kids aren't getting surgical interventions, and the ones that are tend to be close to suicidal. As for hormones, it's not an easy discussion. Puberty floods people full of hormones and radically changes them, and while I think there's room to discuss the balancing act we should take with regard to puberty blockers, saying "children aren't old enough to choose the possibly irreversible side effects of blockers but they are old enough to choose the definitely irreversible effects of puberty" just doesn't work for me as a blanket statement.
