I totally get not wanting to cross a paywall, so I'll do better on non-NYT links in the future, but the argument that somehow there is no opinion in "news" is pure bullshit. A raw recital of facts still has to exercise editorial judgment, ie. opinion, on what facts to present.
On the flip side, an opinion piece has to rest on verifiable facts. This one, for instance, links out to the original Supreme Court order in the very first sentence. You can download the PDF and verify any claim they make.
There's nothing wrong with opinion pieces. All that's at issue is you don't want to put the time in to focus and understand the perspective being shared there. Which is your right, but please don't use that right to claim all opinion pieces are inherently useless and curtail my right to use a particular piece of writing as a starting point for a discussion.
