Personally, I think it's because the writers-rightly or wrongly-think the viewers/watchers need the characters to be...relatable

This did both Bond and Egwene a profound disservice, suggesting neither were truly capable of truly altruistic acts. People have proven themselves capable of altruism over millenia of history...

If the human brain were so simple we could understand it, we would be so simple we couldn't understand it.
