but all this stuff about people being able to achieve if they try misses a big point - not everyone can, as the system relies on minimum wage workers, people doing low paid jobs, a certain degree of unemployment to ensure that wages aren't too high etc - the joys of capitalism.
Now, I'm not saying that there are better systems, but I don't think you can fairly say all black people could be better off if they tried, as I think there are barriers, like there are for all people.
But around racism, if there are still instances where if there are two equal candidates for a role, one black and one white, but the hirers will 95% of the time choose the white person for the role, then when unconscious bias or not, that will help keep things the way they are.
And I think there have been many cases where achievement won't change a bigot's point of view, or if it does - it is as an exception - 'that person may be good, but the rest of them aren't' so the underlying issues remain.
Plus, if a white person doesn't have to prove themselves through achievement, but a black person does, doesn't that suggest some sort of racism within the overall system?
Now to some of the other points around crime stats and the like, issue could be that while official crime stats will show that black people do 25% of crimes, against a population of 13%, what that misses is that this is convicted crimes etc, and there are some studies out there (and I don't know how reputable they are) that crimes black people are convicted for, white people are less likely to be convicted for, and so when look at all crime, it isn't necessarily that black people commit more, just that they are more likely to be found guilty of it.
